Breast augmentation surgery is traditionally achieved with the help of saline or silicone breast implants. The silicone shells are filled with saline or silicone gel, then inserted into the breast tissue to create more volume and fullness. Breast implants are considered safe and have FDA approval, but there is a small percentage of patients that have complications after their procedure. At HMS Plastic Surgery, we offer breast implant illness treatment at our plastic surgery center in Miami, FL.
Breast Implant Illness (BII) Symptoms
Breast implant illness (BII) is not a specific condition, but it is a category of symptoms that a small group of patients experience after implant breast augmentation. The FDA has not recognized BII as a condition related to implant augmentation, but a very small group of patients have reported a variety of health concerns they believe are related to their implants. Some of these symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Anxiety or depression
- Rashes
- Muscle and joint pain
- Hair loss
- Vision changes
The belief is that if the symptoms of BII are related to the implants, it may be an autoimmune or inflammatory response. It is also possible that the symptoms are related to other undiagnosed health conditions.
Breast Implant Removal
The most common breast implant illness treatment is removal of the implant. A capsulectomy can also be performed, which removes the capsule of scar tissue around the implant. For many women with BII symptoms, removal of the implant can offer relief from their symptoms. However, not everyone with BII symptoms experiences complete elimination of their symptoms after the implants are removed.
