Not all tattoos are well-designed or attractive, but they are a permanent change to your skin. Whether the tattoo you have is no longer relevant to your life or it was poorly done, if you want your tattoo removed, there are non-surgical laser treatments that can erase the ink from your skin. At HMS Plastic Surgery, we offer laser tattoo removal treatments at our center in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale, FL, area.
Tattoos are made with ink that is inserted into scar tissue in the skin. The special ink and process leave behind colored ink molecules in the skin that are too large for the body to remove. There are only two ways to perform tattoo removal – either surgically remove the skin or use lasers to break up the ink molecules. Laser tattoo removal is less invasive with fewer risks and scars left behind, fading tattoos with light energy.
Laser Treatments for Tattoo
To remove tattoo ink from the skin, laser treatments target the ink within the skin to shatter the ink particles. By making the particles smaller, the body can remove these foreign objects and eliminate them from the body. Laser tattoo removal requires multiple treatments – the number of treatments will depend on the size, color and darkness of the tattoo. The lasers used are able to target the colored ink trapped in the skin without harming the surrounding skin. The particles absorb the heat and break apart. Dark ink, such as black, is easier to remove than lighter colors, as the light is attracted to darker pigments.
Laser tattoo removal is a gradual process. With each treatment, the tattoo particles are dispersed and eliminated, fading the tattoo. Laser treatments will not completely remove all evidence of the tattoo but can make it mostly unnoticeable once most of the pigment is removed.
